Lessons Learned in Leading a K-12 Schools Foundation in a Suburban Community
Many insights are illuminated within eight years of advocating for public schools from a community
perspective.
The list below offers few groundbreaking observations - such attributes are commonly shared among
the volunteer environment pervasive, and essential, to American society - perhaps most are obvious.
Yet the obvious is often the most important to thoroughly understand. As a volunteer at the hub of my
school district's various civic activities - local levy citizen committee, schools foundation, local and
regional PTA, and public ed state legislative advocacy organizations - it is clear that ignoring the
obvious too often allows the always-present opportunity costs to unintentionally sabotage the best of
intentions.
